Public engagement

The Department of Earth Sciences liaises with private companies, public administrations and schools for various activities in the following areas:

  • collaborative applied research
  • consulting on scientific, technical and regulatory matters pertaining to geological, natural and environmental sciences (also in the framework of legal disputes)
  • provision of services to third parties, e.g. lab tests or consulting services, under framework agreements or contracts
  • refresher courses for teachers and professionals
  • pre-degree training courses in the areas of geological, natural and environmental sciences
  • continuous professional development for graduates, also in collaboration with professional associations.

These activities are aimed at the enhancement of research results and the production of public goods, in line with the strategic objectives of third mission and social impact.

Moreover, a lot of our students do curricular and extra-curricular internships at public administrations and private companies, or have an external tutor to assist them in writing their Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD thesis (co-tutorship).

The Department of Earth Sciences also manages the Valchiavenna station as a point of contact with the mountain community of Valchiavenna (in the province of Sondrio), to improve territorial planning and protect and enhance the area.
The Valchiavenna Station contributes to the implementation of the Cohesion Policy actions for 2014-2020, based on the National Strategy for Inner Areas, one of which is indeed Valchiavenna. Despite the long-lasting collaboration with the mountain community, our range of action in the area remains quite limited.
